Before Antietam
From Waupun, a hatter, he enlisted on 18 June 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company D, 3rd Wisconsin Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was slightly wounded in the leg in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was treated at hospitals in Frederick, MD and Philadelphia, PA, and was listed as a deserter from Philadelphia on 9 January 1863.
He had, however, enlisted in Philadelphia on Christmas Day 1862 as a Private in Company M of the First United States Cavalry for the balance of his term of enlistment. He reenlisted at Mitchell's Station, VA on 12 February 1864, was promoted to Corporal, and was killed in action in a skirmish with Confederate cavalry at Shepherdstown, WV on 25 August 1864.
