He was discharged 20 December 1862 to enlist in the Regular US Army. He enlisted 20 November 1862 at Ft. Hamilton, NY in Battery G, 5th US Artillery, listed as a farmer, age 22. He reenlisted at the end of his service term on 29 June 1864.
