Before Antietam
From Wiota, he enlisted in Company H, 3rd Wisconsin Infantry on 22 April 1861. He was appointed Corporal and Sergeant, dates not given.
On the Campaign
There were three Agnew brothers David, John L, and James P] in Company H. All three were wounded at Antietam. All were noble soldiers. David, one of them, is mentioned for special gallantry at Beverly Ford; and John, another, was severely wounded in various parts of his body at New Hope Church. All three re-enlisted as veterans, and all were mustered out at the end of the war.
The rest of the War
He mustered out with his Company on 18 July 1865.
