He enlisted in Pottsville at age 29 on 6 September 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company C, 96th Pennsylvania Infantry on 23 September. He was absent sick in the Summer of 1862, but returned to his company on 24 August.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.
