From Pottsville, he enlisted at age 29 on 6 September 1861 in Company C, 96th Pennsylvania Infantry. He was absent sick in the Summer of 1862, but returned to his Company 24 August.

He was killed in action at Crampton's Gap on 14 September 1862.
