Before Antietam

Son of a bank president in Schuylkill Haven, PA, he enrolled and mustered at Pottsville, PA on 22 September 1861 as 2nd Lieutenant of Company A, 96th Pennsylvania Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was with his Company in action at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862, where Colonel Cake noted ...

Lieutenant Sailor[sic], Company A; Lieutenant Hannum, Company D; Lieutenant Russell, Company C, and Lieutenant Huber, Company B, rendered marked services on the field.

The rest of the War

He resigned his commission on 27 September and was discharged on 8 November 1862.

After the War

He filed for a veteran's pension for disability in July 1875 and by 1880 was an unmarried laborer living with his parents in Schuylkill Haven. At the 1890 Veteran's Census he was living in Pottstown, Montgomery County, PA. In 1900 he was a landlord of a boarding house on Main Street there and in 1910 he was farming with his nephew Earl M. W. Seitz (his sister Augusta's son). He had finally retired in Pottstown by 1920.
