At age 40 he enlisted and mustered in Pottsville on 12 October 1861 as a Private in Company D, 96th Pennsylvania Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was mortally wounded in action at Crampton’s Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He died of his wounds in a field hospital at Burkittsville, MD on 19 September 1862.
