Before Antietam

Age 33 (or 36) he enlisted in Schuylkill County and mustered in Harrisburg on 20 April 1861 as a Private in Company E of the 5th Pennsylvania Infantry for 3 months' service. He mustered out with them on 24 July. He enlisted again, as a Private in Company D, 96th Pennsylvania Infantry on 25 September 1861.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Crampton’s Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.
