Age 27, he enlisted at Donaldson, PA on 23 September 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company H, 96th Pennsylvania Infantry at Pottsville the same date.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded in action at Crampton’s Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He died of wounds on 15 September 1862, probably in a field hospital in Burtkittsville, MD.
