Age 38, he enlisted on 14 October 1861 and mustered the same day in Pottsville as a Private in Company K, 96th Pennsylvania Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded in action at Crampton’s Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He died at a field hospital in nearby Burkittsville, MD of wounds on 22 October 1862. His mother began receiving a pension in January 1863 based on his service.
