Before Antietam
A 19 year old miller, he enlisted at Pottsville on 10 October 1861 in Company G, 96th Pennsylvania Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in the shoulder in action at Crampton’s Gap on 14 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was listed as a deserter on 27 February 1863, but he returned to his unit on 7 November 1863. He again deserted on 25 July 1864. He was transferred to Company G, 95th Pennsylvania Infantry on 18 October 1864 and returned to his unit on 25 January 1865. Again listed as a deserter on 28 April 1865.
