He enlisted at age 23 on 1 November 1861 at Arcade, NY, to serve three years; mustered in as Private, Company G, 78th New York Infantry on 12 March 1862.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.
The rest of the War
He was wounded again, in action on 2 or 3 July 1863 at Gettysburg, PA. He reenlisted as a veteran on 26 December 1863 and transferred to Company G, One Hundred and Second New York Infantry on 12 July 1864.
