He enlisted at age 19 on 19 November 1861 at Brooklyn, to serve three years; mustered in as Corporal, Company A, 78th New York Infantry on 21 November 1861.

On the Campaign

He was promoted to Sergeant on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was promoted again, to Sergeant-Major of the regiment, on 12 April 1863, but returned to Company A as Sergeant on 1 July 1863. He was wounded and captured in action on 15 or 16 June 1864 at Pine Knob, GA. He was paroled, no date, and mustered out 20 November 1864 at New York City.
