He enlisted at age 33 in Rochester, NY, to serve three years, and mustered in as Private, Company H, 78th New York Infantry on 21 January 1862. He was promoted to Corporal on 20 June 1862.
On the Campaign
He was killed in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.
