Benjamin Flowers

A farmer's son, in 1860 he was a 24 year old day laborer living with his parents and 6 siblings at Madison Court House in Madison County, FL. He enlisted at Camp Leon near Tallahassee, FL on 2 April 1862 and mustered as a Private in Company D, 5th Florida Infantry.

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg:

He was wounded five different times and in as many different places; yet he continued to shoot away as fearlessly as ever, until he received his fifth wound, which disabled one of his hands, so that he could not load his piece ...

He was admitted to a hospital in Richmond, VA on 2 October then sent to a hospital in Winchester, VA and was afterward on wounded furlough to about March 1863. Except for a period of illness in the Fall of 1864, he was with his company to the end of the war. He was surrendered and paroled at Madison, FL on 13 May 1865.

In 1870 he had his own household and was farming with his father and siblings near Madison, FL, but by 1880 and to at least 1900 he farmed his own place at Hamburg, FL.
