He mustered as Private in Company H, First Florida Infantry on 5 April 1861 and was discharged as Corporal on 4 April 1862. He mustered as Corporal in Company C, 8th Florida Infantry on 10 May 1862.

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.
