He was a married farmer from Evergreen, AL when he enlisted on 25 April 1861 in Company E, 4th Alabama Infantry.

He was appointed Orderly (First) Sergeant 18 October 1862. He was discharged in 1863 on his election to the Alabama Legislature.
After the War
He served in the Alabama House of Representatives from 1863-1865.
