Before Sharpsburg
He was an unmarried 21 year old telegraph operator from Evergreen, AL when he enlisted as Private on 25 April 1861 in Company E, 4th Alabama Infantry. He was wounded in the leg at First Manassas on 21 July 1861, and was appointed Orderly (First) Sergeant the next day. He resigned his rank 1 January 1862, but was re-appointed 23 April 1862.

The rest of the War
Brevetted 2nd Lieutenant on 30 September (to date from August) 1862. He was elected 2nd Lieutenant 9 October 1862, First Lieutenant 1 June 1863, and Captain 3 July 1863 at Gettysburg, PA. He was wounded in action at Gettysburg, PA on 3 July 1863 and at Cold Harbor, VA in 1864. He retired 20 January 1865.
