Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a prosperous 26 year old clerk and owner of 6 slaves in Tuskegee, Macon County, AL. He enlisted there on 28 April 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company B, 4th Alabama Infantry in Lynchburg, VA.
On the Campaign
He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.
The rest of the War
He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was formally exchanged on 10 November. He was wounded in action at Chickamauga, GA on 18 September 1863, returned to duty in about January 1864, and was present with his company in action in most engagements until he was surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse, VA on 9 April 1865.
