He was an unmarried 25 year old merchant from Tuskegee, AL when he enrolled as First Lieutenant on 28 April 1861 in Company B, 4th Alabama Infantry. He was elected Captain on 21 April 1862. He was wounded in action at Malvern Hill, VA on 1 July 1862.

On the Campaign

Present in action on South Mountain and at Sharpsburg.

The rest of the War

He was again in action at Fredericksburg, VA in December 1862. His resignation was accepted to date from 10 March 1863 by the Secretary of War.
