He was an unmarried 22 year old farmer from Benton, AL when he enlisted as Private on 26 April 1861 in Company C, 4th Alabama Infantry. He was elected 3rd Lieutenant on 21 April 1862, and promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on 15 July.

On the Campaign

Present in action on South Mountain and at Sharpsburg.

The rest of the War

Present with his Company in action in most engagements at least to the siege of Petersburg in 1864, having been promoted to First Lieutenant on 28 January 1863.
