He was an unmarried student from Uniontown, AL when he enlisted as Private on 4 March 1862 in Company D, 4th Alabama Infantry in Richmond, VA. He was detailed as letter bearer on 29 June 1862.

Present in action at Boonsboro and Sharpsburg.
The rest of the War
Severely wounded 24 March 1863 at Knoxville, TN, fell into the hands of the enemy, and was exchanged 6 September 1864. He was absent on furlough as of January 1865.
