He was an unmarried 21 year old printer from Huntsvile, AL when he enlisted as Private on 26 April 1861 in Company F, 4th Alabama Infantry. He was present with his Company in engagements from First to Second Manassas, VA in 1862.

He was severely wounded in the thigh and captured in action on 17 September 1862.
