He was an unmarried 18 year old student from Marion, AL when he enlisted as Private on 29 August 1861 in Company G, 4th Alabama Infantry at Manassas, VA. He was present at most engagements from Seven Pines to Second Manassas, VA in 1862.
On the Campaign
Present in action at Boonsboro and Sharpsburg.
The rest of the War
In action with his Company at Fredericksburg, VA in December 1862 and on the Gettysburg Campaign in July 1863. He was transferred, promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in the 25th Alabama Infantry on 7 September 1863.

Basic information from State of Alabama1. No one by this name is found in any other sources of military information. George Doherty Johnston (1832-1910, relative?) enrolled in Company G of the 4th Infantry as 2nd Lieutenant in 1861, transferred as Major in January 1862 to the 25th Infantry. He was Lt Colonel and Colonel of the 25th Infantry, before being commissioned Brigadier General in July 1864.
