He was an unmarried 19 year old student from Marion, AL when he enlisted as Private on 24 April 1861 in Company G, 4th Alabama Infantry. He was present at most engagements from First to Second Manassas.

The rest of the War
In action with from Fredericksburg, VA in December 1862 through to then siege of Petersburg in late 1864. He was detailed to the Pioneer Corps from 30 November 1862 to 1 April 1863.
