He enlisted in Company E, First Texas Infantry on 20 April 1861 in New Orleans.

On the Campaign

He was slightly wounded in the head in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was accidentally wounded in camp on 21 February 1863 and wounded in the arm and chest at Gettysburg, PA on 2 July 1863, and captured at Cashtown, PA on 4 or 5 July. He was exchanged from the Chester, PA hospital on 20 August 1863.
