He was an unmarried railroad man from Huntsville, AL when he enlisted as Private on 26 April 1861 in Company I, 4th Alabama Infantry. He was present at most engagements from First to Second Manassas, VA.

Present in action on South Mountain and at Sharpsburg.
The rest of the War
In action from Fort Huger, VA in April 1863 through to the siege of Petersburg, VA in 1864. He was appointed 2nd Corporal 1 July 1864.
