Before Sharpsburg
His father James Joseph Donegan was born in Ireland and a successful Commission Merchant in Huntsville, AL by 1850, when Christopher was 13. He was a student at the University of Virginia from 1855-57. He was an unmarried (probably law) student when he enlisted as Private on 26 April 1861 in Company I, 4th Alabama Infantry. He was present at most engagements from First to Second Manassas, VA.

In action from Fredericksburg, VA in December 1862 through to the siege of Petersburg, VA in 1864.
After the War
He was a lawyer.
