He enlisted as Private in Company E, First Texas Infantry on 22 September 1861 at Camp McLeod, VA.

On the Campaign

He was slightly wounded in the arm and side in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was on furlough to at least November 1862, and was detailed to the Medical Purveyor's Office, Richmond, VA in August 1863.
