He was an unmarried carpenter from Huntsville, AL when he enlisted as Private on 26 April 1861 in Company I, 4th Alabama Infantry. He was present at most engagements from First to Malvern Hill, VA.

He was with his Company on South Mountain and at Sharpsburg.
The rest of the War
He was at Fredericksburg, VA in December 1862. He was promoted to Lieutenant in Heavy Artillery 5 August 1863.
