Before Sharpsburg

An unmarried 19 year old farmer, he enlisted in Company A, 8th Alabama Infantry on 8 May 1861. He was present at Yorktown, VA, but absent sick for much of 1862.

On the Campaign

He was captured while straggling (in Maryland) in September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was exchanged in January 1863. He was listed as a deserter at the Wilderness, VA on 6 May 1863, but was wounded and captured in action at Gettysburg, PA on 2 July 1863. He then took the oath of allegiance to the United States and enlisted on 22 or 23 September 1863 in Company F, 3rd Maryland Cavalry (US). He was listed as a deserter on 5 January 1864.
