An unmarried 25 year old, he enlisted in Company G, 3rd South Carolina Infantry Battalion on 5 December 1861 in Columbia, SC. He was promoted Corporal before 14 September 1862.

On the Campaign

He was captured in action on 14 September 1862 at Fox's Gap.

The rest of the War

Held at Fort Delaware, he was sent to Fortress Monroe, VA and exchanged on 15 December 1862. He was wounded severely, in the hip, in action at Chickamauga, GA on 20 September 1863. He was absent, wounded to at least 30 June 1864.
