Before Sharpsburg
An unmarried 19 year old farmer, he enlisted in Company G, 3rd South Carolina Infantry Battalion on 6 February 1862 in Columbia, SC. He was appointed Corporal on 14 April 1862, and Sergeant on 8 August.
On the Campaign
He was elected 3rd Lieutenant on 15 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was wounded in action, in the left foot and thigh, slightly, at Gettysburg, PA on 2 July 1863. He was at the General Hospital #9, Richmond, VA and the Episcopal Church Hospital, Williamsburg, VA later in July. He was listed as absent without leave by November 1863, but also as not returning to duty due to wounds.
