He enlisted in Company D, 3rd South Carolina Infantry Battalion on 5 December 1861 at Adams Run, SC at age 27.

On the Campaign

He was appointed Corporal on 15 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was wounded slightly in action while bearing the colors at Chickamauga, GA on 20 September 1863. Treated at the Fairgrounds Hospital, Atlanta, GA. Detached indefinitely for duty with the South Carolina Railroad on 15 November 1863 and promoted Sergeant by May 1864.
