He enlisted as Private in the Boyce Guards in 1861, and re-enlisted as Sergeant in Company G, 3rd South Carolina Infantry Battalion, 6 February 1862 at Columbia, SC.

On the Campaign

He was captured in action at Fox's Gap on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

Held at Fort Delaware, he was sent to Aikens Landing, VA and exchanged on 2 October 1862. He was in General Hospital #8, Richmond, VA with typhoid fever, and furloughed home for 30 days on 28 October. He returned to duty 12 December 1862. He died in a hospital at Gordonsville, VA on 30 June 1863.
