Before Antietam

From Vigo County, IN, he enlisted and mustered at Terra Haute, IN on 7 June 1861 as a Private in Company F, 14th Indiana Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the chest and head in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He reenlisted on 15 December 1863 and transferred to Company B of the 20th Indiana Infantry on 6 June 1864. He was wounded again, mortally, by a gunshot to the abdomen on 18 or 19 June 1864 at Petersburg, VA, and admitted to the 2nd Division US Army Hospital (Sickel Barracks General Hospital) in Alexandria, VA on 28 June. He died there of his wound on 15 August 1864.

He married Louisa Woodard (1841-1859) in January 1858 and they had a daughter Sarah Elizabeth (1859-1872). Louisa died a week after Sarah was born. Sarah lived with her maternal grandfather and began receiving a US pension in March 1867 from her father's service, dating back to his death.
