Before Antietam

A 17 year old farmer in Daviess County, he mustered as Private, Company D, 27th Indiana Infantry on 12 September 1861. He was promoted to Corporal and Sergeant, dates not given.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the left hip in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was treated at the Showman Farm Hospital at Sharpsburg, MD, and discharged for wounds in Harrisburg, PA on 11 July 1863. He reenlisted, in Company B, 10th Indiana Cavalry on 8 January 1864, and was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on 1 June 1865. He mustered out on 31 August 1865 at Vicksburg, MS.
