Before Antietam

In 1860 he was a 19 year old farmer living with his parents and brother John on their small place in Cadiz, Green County, WI. He enlisted on 30 March 1862 and mustered as a Private in Company D, 3rd Wisconsin Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was slightly wounded by a gunshot to his chest in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was admitted to US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD on 24 September and transferred out on 29 September for exchange. He returned to duty, reenlisted for the war, and mustered out on 18 July 1865 in Madison, WI.

After the War

By 1870 and to at least 1880 he was farming his own place back in Cadiz, WI. In 1900 he was a day laborer in Dallas County, IA and in 1910 was working odd jobs in Des Moines, IA.

He married Mariah Phillips (1853-) in June 1869. He married again, Harriet Annabelle (or Hannabelle) “Hattie” Reynolds (or 1867-1965) in 1885 and they had 7 children between 1887 and 1906.
