Age 24, he enlisted on 23 April 1861 in New York City for three years and mustered as Private, Company I, 79th New York Infantry on 27 May.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was treated at the Locust Spring field hospital near Keedysville, MD then transferred to a hospital in Washington, DC. He was listed as a deserter from the hospital in April 1863, with no further military record.
