Baptized as Karl, in 1860 he was a 23 year old farmer on his parent's place at Clarence in Erie County, NY. He enlisted and mustered 10 April 1862 at Buffalo as a Private in Company E, 21st New York Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
