Age 28, he enlisted in Columbia on 14 August 1862 and mustered into service as Private, Company B, 45th Pennsylvania Infantry on 20 August in Harrisburg.

He was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was treated at the Locust Spring Hospital at Sharpsburg, MD and returned to duty. He was discharged for disability on 20 May 1865.
