He enlisted in Company P, 28th Pennsylvania Infantry on 25 September 1861. He was promoted to Sergeant on 11 November 1861.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in the left foot in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He transferred to Company E, 146th Pennsylvania Volunteers on 28 October 1862.
