Born in Massachusetts, by 1850 at age 22 he was a shoemaker living in Georgetown, SC. From Chesterfield County, he enrolled as Captain, Company D, 8th South Carolina Infantry, date not given.

On the Campaign

He commanded his Company at Sharpsburg.

After the War

By 1880 he was Sheriff of Chesterfield County, SC, and served in that post for 18 years.

References & notes

His service from Kershaw's Brigade1 and the Roster2, both of which have him as P.F. Spofferd. His presence at Sharpsburg from Adams' Reminiscences of the Nineteenth Massachusetts Regiment (1899). His brother Daniel Webster Spofford was in Company A, 19th Massachusetts, and was wounded at Antietam. Details from a post about the 19th Massachusetts by Jim Buchanan at Walking the West Woods. His gravesite is on Findagrave. Phineas' third brother Aaron was in Company E of the 12th Massachusetts, and was killed at the Second Battle of Bull Run on 30 August 1862.
