Before Antietam

Age 21 years, he enlisted 9 August 1861 at New York City to serve two years and mustered in as Private, Company E, 31st New York Infantry on 14 August. He was promoted to Corporal on 1 August 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the knee in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was treated at the Stone House field hospital on the Samuel Poffenberger farm at Sharpsburg. He was wounded again, mortally, near Fredericksburg, VA on 3 May 1863, and died of wounds at Douglas Hospital in Washington, DC on 11 July 1863.
