A 23 year old farmer from Middleton, he enlisted in Company F, 35th Massachusetts Infantry on 29 July 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded by gunshot in the left lung in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was treated at the Locust Spring Hospital, Sharpsburg, and in Frederick, MD. He was discharged for wounds on 13 January 1863.
