Age 43 years, he enlisted on 30 September 1861 at Ogdensburg to serve three years, and mustered in as Private, Company H, 60th New York Infantry on 30 October.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded by gunshot to the left chest in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was treated at a field hospital near SHarpsburg, and briefly in a US Army hospital in Frederick, MD, 27 - 28 September, but died of wounds in a hospital in Alexandria, VA on 16 November 1862.
