An 18 year old farmer in Montgomery County, he enlisted on 1 September 1861 in Upper Merion, and mustered as Private, Company I, 51st Pennsylvania Infantry on 28 September in Harrisburg.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He reenlisted on 1 January 1864, was detailed as a guard at the First Division, Ninth Corps Hospital on 10 May 1864, and mustered out with his Company on 27 July 1865.
