Age 28 years, he enlisted 6 October 1861 at Stratford to serve three years, and mustered in as Corporal, Company D, 97th New York Infantry on 16 October. He was returned to ranks, no date.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was treated at the Hoffman Farm and Smoketown Hospitals in Sharpsburg. He was discharged for disability 28 November 1862 at Baltimore, MD.
