A 22 year old mechanic in Clinton, MA, he mustered as Private, Company E, 21st Massachusetts Infantry on 20 July 1861.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He reenlisted on 1 January 1864 ad transferred to Company I, 36th Massachusetts Infantry 21 October 1864. He was sent to Company F, 56th Massachusetts Infantry on 8 June 1865 and mustered out in Alexandria, VA on 12 July 1865.
