Age 18, he enlisted on 11 October 1861 in New York City for three years, and he mustered as a Private in Company H, 61st NY Infantry on 19 October.

On the Campaign

He was wounded by contusion to the scalp from a shell in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He transferred to Company A, 24th Regiment, Veteran Reserve Corps on 9 January 1864.
