An 18 year old blacksmith, he enlisted in Norristown on 9 September 1861 and mustered as Private, Company A, 51st Pennsylvania Infantry on 12 September in Harrisburg.
On the Campaign
He was slightly wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He reenlisted on 1 January 1864, was promoted to Corporal, date not given, and mustered out with his Company on 27 July 1865 in Alexandria, VA.
